Lietava (other name: Lietava Castle; documented historical names Litova, Letava, Lethawa, Zsolnalitva) is located 10 km from the regional city of Žilina near Cibuľník Hill on the eastern edge of the Súľovské Hills. Cadastrally, it is located on the border between the municipalities of Lietava and Lietavská Svinná, at an altitude of 635 m above sea level. Due to its level of preservation, it is among the largest (area of 1 hectare of land) and the most beautifully preserved ruins not only in Slovakia, but also in Central Europe. The demise of the Gothic-Renaissance castle dates back to 1753, and the ruins were abandoned in the forest until 1999. That's when the Lietava Castle Rescue Association was founded, which since 2003 has been rescuing buildings in the form of sensitive stabilization, conservation and partial restoration. The castle is still a freely accessible ruin, apart from the buildings that are currently being repaired. The current owner "Association for the Rescue of the Lietava Castle" operates an exposition dedicated to the history, owners of the building, as well as archaeological finds in the middle part of the castle.
