The An-2 aircraft was created at the Oleg Antonov OKB at the V.P. Chkalov Novosibirsk Aviation Plant. The first Antonov prototype took off in Novosibirsk on August 31, 1947 with the designation SChA-1 powered by a seven-cylinder AŠ-21 engine with a power of 600 kW. During the tests, completed in July 1948, an AŠ-61IR drive unit with a power of 734 kW was installed.

From the beginning, it was developed as a highly versatile economic aircraft for use primarily in forestry and agriculture. Thanks to its capabilities, it was used in many different fields of activity, from the transport of people and cargo, through agricultural powdering, sightseeing flights, to military use (as transport and airborne). Its advantages include a short take-off and the possibility of operation from unpaved surfaces and in conditions with minimal technical equipment, with a relatively high transport capacity.

The aircraft were serially produced in Kiev from 1948 (until 1960), at PZL Mielec in Poland from 1959 (until 1991 and then to a limited extent again in 2001), in Russia in the Moscow Region from 1965, and in China in Harbin since 1968. They were also imported to Czechoslovakia, where they served in both the civilian and military sectors. To us they are known by the nickname "Andula" and we can still see them flying in aero clubs today. Although it was assumed several times that the production of the An-2 would definitely end, in the end there was always information about new production or about newly concluded orders with a delivery date in the future. The production of this type, with certain adjustments and breaks, continues even after more than 75 years.

Over the years there have also been - more or less successful - attempts to use the An-2 for direct combat activity in several military conflicts; from the war in Vietnam, through several African wars, the Soviets during the war in Afghanistan, to the war in Yugoslavia and the war in Nagorno-Karabakh. Most often, the An-2 was used in areas and periods with expected low enemy air activity, for disruptive depth or night attacks on ground targets, armed with standard aerial or various improvised bombs (e.g. modified mortar shells), or with salvo rocket launchers intended for helicopters. During these activities, the An-2 was documented to be shot down by various machines, from the Bell UH-1, AH-1 Cobra, to the Su-27. During the war in Yugoslavia, there was a case when more than 10 MANPADS were used to shoot down one An-2, when it turned out that the old piston engine was a much more difficult target for the infrared sensors of these missiles than modern jet engines .
