The Tatra 623 was a two-seater car with an engine in the back, developed for quick assistance at races and in normal traffic. It was first created by the reconstruction of Tatra 613-2 vehicles by the rescue organization AMK Narex (since 1992 Narimex). Tatra prepared the basic documentation for this conversion and had the 623 car approved, the conversions then took place in the Tatra service and mostly in cooperation with Narex or Kovoslužba. In 1984, AMK Narex already had six of these cars.
The volume of the engine from Tatra 613-2 increased from 3.5 l to 3.8 l, which increased the performance. The cars continued to be rebuilt for fire departments and assistance services, and today they are mostly replaced by new, mostly Škoda Octavia cars.
In 1986, the team participated with eight T623s in the first F1 race in the Hungarian Grand Prix to provide assistance. The FISA commissioner then declared that it was one of the top three teams in the world. The last Hungarian GP in which the T623 took part was in 1995.
At least two cars marked "R" from Tatra Kopřivnice were lightened (aluminum body, plastic windows), got a 4-liter engine with 300 horsepower and reached speeds of up to 250 km/h. The super-sport MTX Tatra V8 was then derived from this version.
"Tatra 624" had more internal space for medical equipment thanks to the increased rear space above the engine. Inside, there was enough space for a stretcher and a medic, who could treat him during the transport. The reconstruction took place in Pražská Avia and the internal equipment was prepared by members of AMK Narex.
