It is a typical symbol of the city and the only gate that has survived from the five medieval city gates. The origin dates back to the construction of the fortifications - at the beginning of the second half of the 13th century. In the sixteenth century, the gate underwent Gothic and Renaissance alterations, until it developed into its current form. The specific appearance is given by the extensive attic at the top of the tower. In 1853, the gate was renovated and equipped with a clock. The complex front gate with defense systems was demolished in 1862. In January 1995, the gate had to be statically secured due to a drop in foundations. However, its crown was severely damaged, so in 1996 it was completely reconstructed. At present, the gate is open to the public as a lookout tower and a small museum of the Jihlava underground and mining. The Jihlava Astronomical Society is also based at the gate, and public observations of the sky take place here every Monday after dark.
