Moskva was a missile cruiser of the Russian Navy and the lead ship of the Project 1164 Atlant class. It was accepted into service in 1982 as a missile cruiser of the Soviet Navy, Slava. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was transferred to the successor Russian Navy, and in 1996 it was renamed Moskva. It was the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet. It was damaged during the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 13 April 2022 and sank the day after. According to the Russian version, the cause of its destruction was a fire on board, according to the Ukrainian version, it was hit by two Ukrainian Neptun anti-ship missiles.
This is the largest wartime loss of a Russian Navy ship since the Luftwaffe attack on the battleship Marat during World War II and the first loss of a flagship since the sinking of the battleship Kňaz Suvorov at the Battle of Tsushima during the Russo-Japanese War. The last sunken warship of similar size was the Argentine cruiser ARA General Belgrano (ex USS Phoenix (CL-46)) sunk during the Falklands War in 1982.
