The North American schooner "Bertha L. Downs" was one of many large 4-, 5- and 6-masted schooners built on the banks of the Kennebec River in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These large wooden vessels were almost universally used in the coastal trade, and a major part of them was the transport of coal from Virginia to New England. It was launched in 1908 and after ten years in the lumber and coal trade was sold to Danish owners and renamed to "Atlas".
