The M1 Abrams is a third-generation American main battle tank designed by Chrysler Defense (now General Dynamics Land Systems) and named after General Creighton Abrams. Designed for modern armored ground warfare, it is currently one of the heaviest tanks in service at nearly 62 metric tons. It introduced several innovative features including a multi-fuel turbine engine, sophisticated Chobham composite armour, a computer-controlled fire control system, separate ammunition storage in the ventilation compartment and anti-weapons protection for crew safety. Early M1 models were armed with the licensed 105mm Royal Ordnance L7 cannon, while later variants have the licensed Rheinmetall 120mm L/44.

The M1 Abrams was developed from the failed MBT-70 project to replace the M60 Patton tanks. There are three main variants of the Abrams - M1, M1A1 and M1A2 (Warrior's Chariot), with each new iteration bringing improvements in armament, protection and electronics. Extensive improvements to the latest M1A2C and D versions (formerly known as M1A2 System Enhancement Package version 3 or SEPv3 and M1A2 SEPv4) were implemented, such as improved composite armor, better optics, digital systems and ammunition. The Abrams was to be replaced by the Future Combat Systems XM1202 vehicle, but due to its cancellation, the US Army decided to continue maintaining and operating the M1 series for the foreseeable future by upgrading it with improved optics, armor and firepower.

The M1 Abrams entered service in 1980 and currently serves as the main battle tank of the United States Army and Marine Corps. The export version is used by the armies of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Iraq. The Abrams was first used in combat in the Gulf War and saw combat in both the Afghanistan War and the Iraq War as part of the United States Armed Forces, while Iraqi Abrams tanks were deployed in the war against the Islamic State and were used by Saudi Arabia during the Yemeni civil war.
