Zvíkov is a castle above the Orlík reservoir at the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers in the Písek district. It stands on a rocky watchtower about one kilometer north of the village of Zvíkovské Podhradí at an altitude of 370 m. The castle is managed by the National Monuments Institute and is open to the public during visiting hours. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 1963 and in 1978 it was entered on the list of national cultural monuments. The castle was probably founded by King Přemysl Otakar I and belonged to his descendants until the death of the family in 1306. After that, it was acquired by the Rosenbergs, from whom King Charles IV bought it. During the Hussite wars, however, he returned to the Rosenbergs. After them, the Švamberks, Eggenbergs and finally the Schwarzenbergs took over the possession of the castle. During its history, it was conquered and rebuilt several times. In his work, Professor August Sedláček called him the king of Czech castles.
