The Colosseum or Roman Colosseum, originally the Flavian Amphitheater (Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium, Italian: Anfiteatro Flavio or Colosseo), is an elliptical amphitheater in the center of the city of Rome, Italy. It is the largest amphitheater ever built in the Roman Empire. It is one of the great works of Roman architecture. It was originally able to hold 50,000 seated spectators and was used for gladiator matches and public spectacles. In addition to gladiatorial games, naumachia (stylized sea battles), fights with wild animals, executions, reconstructions of famous battles and dramas based on classical mythology were also held here. In the early Middle Ages, the building ceased to be used for entertainment. Later it was used for living, assembly, as a fortress, a quarry and a Christian sanctuary.
