Church of st. Bedrich on White

The Church of St. Bedrich is located in the village of Bílá, in the district of Frýdek-Místek. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 1964.

 

The church was built in 1873–1874 by the Archbishop of Olomouc, Cardinal Friedrich Langrat of Fürstenberg, and commissioned Antonín Kybast, the chief archbishop's builder, to implement it. Until then, believers from Bílá had to go to Ostravice. The church built in the so-called Nordic or Swedish style for the World's Fair in Vienna served as inspiration.

 

The original church, which was consecrated in 1875, was slightly smaller than the current one. In 1911 it became a parish church and a sacristy, choir and tower were added. At the same time, the entire building was picked up on a stone plinth.

 

It is a three-aisled wooden building with a folded floor plan. The central rectangular nave is terminated by a beamed ceiling, and a tower with slender windows and a pyramid, topped by a poppy and a cross, sits on the main façade. The tower and the roof are covered with hand-chipped shingles. During the construction of the church, an unusual construction called stavkirche was used, which was widespread mainly in Norway in the 11th century.

 

The upper windows in the church are stained glass, the lower in 1945 was replaced by the Stations of the Cross, made by etching glass. The inner columns were made of one piece of wood, on the first floor they carry a gallery, in the sides with blind arcades. In the back there is a church choir with three open arcades. The organ from 1924 comes from Vojtěch Káš from Brno. In the central part of the nave, the galleries are interrupted by side entrances with halls.
