Zruč nad Sázavou is a castle rebuilt into a chateau in the town of the same name in the district of Kutná Hora. The castle was founded in the first half of the fourteenth century. In the middle of the sixteenth century, the reconstruction took place in the Renaissance style, and at the end of the nineteenth century it was remodeled in neo-Gothic style. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 1966.

The first written mention of the Zruč castle dates from 1335 and is found in the predicate Heřman ze Zruče, which is believed to no longer be inhabited by the so-called Old Castle. In 1355 it was owned by Petr of Kolovrat and in 1364 Ješek of Kolovrat is mentioned, who had sons Václav, Jan and Albert. Wenceslas became a priest and the castle was inherited by the two remaining brothers, who sold it to their uncle Mikuláš Kolovrat of Zruč. He died in 1405 or 1406 and his sons Mikuláš and Aleš farmed together for several years, but in 1410 they shared the property, and the castle belonged to Aleš. The last mention of it comes from 1417.

During the Hussite wars, the castle belonged to the Zruč family from Chřenovice, who belonged to the Kolovrat family. The last member of the family in Zruč was Zdeněk of Kolovrat, who sold the castle to Jindřich Střel of Rokyce in 1547 and moved to Dalkovice. A year later, Jan Černčický of Kácov became the owner, and from 1553, Jiří of Kalenice. His son Adam of Kalenice sold the castle to Jan the Elder of Kalenice in 1560. Sometime around that time, the old castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. The castle belonged to the Kalenice family until the uprising, after which Bavaria was confiscated from Kalenice and in 1623 it was bought by Arnolt Perglas from Losentic.

Among other owners were Markéta Mecerodová from Dobrohoště, from 1657 Albrecht Kryštof Hložek from Žampach, from 1664 Lambert František Hřevenář from Hrach, two years later Vit de Nathermann, from 1671 Countess Johanka Eusebie Millesimová from Žďár, then Countess Cecilie Eleonora Breunerová, Count Maximilian Ludvík Breuner and since 1693 Ferdinand Antonín Mladota from Solopysk. The Zruč passed to Jan Václav Valkoun of Adlar in 1700, followed by brothers Jan Ludvík and Ferdinand Bohuslav Serins of Eichenau. The indebted brothers had to sell the chateau to the Raus of Rausenbach in 1749, after which a number of other families took over. In 1781, however, the chateau burned down and gained its preserved appearance during the neo-Gothic reconstruction in the early 1990s.
