The Parthenon was the main temple of ancient Athens dedicated to the goddess Athena Parthenos (Virgin). It was built in 447-438 BC on the Athenian Acropolis, where we can still see its remains today.

The temple was built alongside a complex of other buildings on the Acropolis during the heyday of Athens under Pericles as a flamboyant demonstration of Athenian wealth (treasury) and power, and last but not least, as a celebration of democracy. The artistic patronage was the greatest ancient sculptor Feidiás, and its architects were Iktinos and Kallikrates. It served its original purpose, as a temple of Athena, until the 4th century AD, i.e. almost 1000 years. During the Christian era, it was transformed into a church of the Virgin Mary and its decoration was damaged. In 1687, the building suffered the greatest damage in its history after the Turkish powder factory was hit by a bomb from a Venetian ship. From that time, fragments of sculptural decoration were occasionally taken to the cities of Western Europe, where we can still find them in museums today. The Parthenon is on the UNESCO list and has been undergoing continuous reconstruction since 1975, now also with the help of European Union funds.

The Parthenon was built as a Greek temple of the Doric order, but some of its elements are of the Ionic order. Marble from nearby quarries was used for the construction. In ancient times it was perceived as the most beautiful Doric temple. Inside stood a 12 m high statue of the goddess Athena made of gold and ivory - the work of the sculptor Pheidias. In the frieze, mythological scenes are depicted - the battle of the gods with the giants, the battle of the Greeks with the Amazons, the battle of the Lapiths with the centaurs and the Fall of Troy. The Ionic frieze around the inner cella depicts the procession of Athenian citizens to the Temple of Athena during the Panathenaic festivities. The sculptural decoration in the shields depicts the birth of Athena and her victory over Poseidon for the rule of Attica. The design of the sculptural decoration and partly the execution also come from Feidius.
