The year 1986 was a turning point - Tatra first took part in the legendary rally. Even though it was a "test" mission, they reached the finish line and showed that they could compete with the best. Even then, Karel Loprais earned respect thanks to his reliable driving and excellent handling of technical passages.

The Tatra 815 is a heavy truck of modular construction with 4×4, 6×6, 8×8, 10×8, 10×10, 12×8 and 12×12 axles for use on the road and in difficult terrain. The engines are liquid-cooled or air-cooled and have a power output of 230–440 kW (310–590 hp). With the T815 model, Czech racer Karel Loprais achieved six victories in the Dakar Rally. The vehicle was modernized in the first half of the 1990s under the name 815-2, in 1997 as TERRN°1 and most recently in 2018 under the name Terra. Tatra is considering ending production of this model by 2023-2024.
