Project 159 (Petya-class in NATO code) was a Cold War-era class of anti-submarine frigates of the Soviet Navy. The frigates were exported to Soviet allies or acquired by successor states after the collapse of the USSR – ten were acquired by India, five by Vietnam, two by Syria, two by Ethiopia, one by Azerbaijan and two by Ukraine. Some of the frigates are still in active service.

A total of 37 units of this class were built for the Soviet Navy between 1961–1977, with a further 17 built for export. 22 units were built in Kaliningrad and another 32 in Khabarovsk.

Two basic versions were built, Project 159 (in the NATO code Petya I) and Project 159A (Petya II), differing in the composition of anti-submarine armament. Project 159 armament consisted of two twin-barreled turrets with 76mm AK-726 guns, one five-barreled 406mm PTA-40 torpedo launcher for SET-40 torpedoes and four RBU-2500 depth charge rocket launchers. The Project 159A version had two rocket launchers of the newer RBU-6000 type and, on the other hand, carried twice the number of torpedo tubes. In order to further improve the search for submarines, nine of the Project 159 were modified to the Project 159M and one of the Project 159A was modified to the Project 159AV. The export version of the class was designated Project 159AE (Petya III).

The propulsion system consisted of two gas turbines and an auxiliary diesel engine. The top speed was 32 knots. Range is 2,000 nautical miles at 14 knots. Durability is 10 days.
