The Škoda 743, named Garde, and its direct successor, the Škoda Rapid, were sports-tuned passenger cars manufactured between 1981 and 1990 by the Czechoslovak company AZNP in Kvasiny and the Bratislava Automobile Works, respectively. The manufacturer's internal numbering was the Škoda 743 (for Garde, Rapid and Rapid 130 types) or the Škoda 747 (Rapid 135 and Rapid 136 types). The car was derived from the four-door sedan Škoda 742 (trade name of the types Škoda 120 LS, Škoda 130 L, Škoda 135 GL and Škoda 136 GL), it differed in a significantly more aerodynamic shape. The front of the car was the same as the sedans, but the windshield was more sloping, the roof lowered and merging smoothly into the sloping rear. The only difference was the only pair of doors. This car replaced the Škoda 110 R, which ceased production in 1980. A total of 44,634 units were produced.
