The Semper Opera, German and sometimes Czech Semperoper, is the opera house of the Saxon State Opera and the concert hall of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden (Saxon State Orchestra Dresden). It is also home to the Semper Ballet. The opera house is located near the river Elbe in the historic center of the capital city of the German state of Saxony, Dresden. The opera house was originally built by the architect Gottfried Semper in 1841. After a devastating fire in 1869, the building was rebuilt, partly again by Semper, and completed in 1878. It was bombed and badly damaged during World War II. The third opening took place after a long renovation and rebuilding in 1985. The Semper Opera House has a long history of presenting world premieres, including major works by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss.
