The temple was built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa (son-in-law and closest collaborator of Emperor Augustus) during his third consulship in 27 BC. The current form of the Pantheon dates from the time of Hadrian, who had it rebuilt after a fire in 123. The center of the temple is a huge hall of the same diameter and height of 43 m covered by a hemispherical vault, in the center of which there is an opening (opaion) with a diameter of 9 m. Concrete was probably used for the construction of the dome for the first time. The author of the reconstruction is unknown. The dome and the ceiling of the vestibule were covered with bronze gilded roof tiles with reliefs that were removed by Pope Urban VIII. Bernini used them for the enormous canopy in the Basilica of St. Peter.
Until the Pantheon was built, the largest domed structure in the world was the Treasury of Atreus at Mycenae. The Pantheon retained this primacy until the 15th century, when the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence was built. Originally, the temple was dedicated to all the gods. Around 609 he was Pope Boniface IV. dedicated to the cult of the Virgin Mary and all the holy martyrs (S. Maria dei Martiri), today there is a national mausoleum. Raphael, the Italian kings Victor Emanuel II, among others, are buried here. and Umbert I., architects Baldassare Peruzzi and Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola. Adjacent to the Patheon are the remains of Neptune's Basilica (cornice and columns), which stood in the neighborhood.
