ORP Orzeł - Polish torpedo submarine, lead vessel of the Orzeł class, launched on 15 January 1938 at De Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen, Netherlands.

The design of the ship was developed with the participation of specialists from the Polish Navy using some design solutions of the Dutch unit Hr. Miss. O.16. A ship with a total length of 84 meters and a draft of 1,473 tons. The design draft of the vessel was 80 meters, but in practice "Orzel" could safely dive to a depth of at least 100 meters. The design and conventional diesel-electric propulsion system allowed the unit to develop a speed of 19.44 knots on the surface and 8.9 knots in the water. The ship's main armament was 20 torpedoes fired from 12 launchers. The fuselage of the "Orzel" was all-welded and - as a novelty - all control planes of the unit were controlled hydraulically. The construction of the ship was partially financed from funds collected as part of a public fundraiser organized by, among others, the Maritime and Colonial League and the Undersea Foundation.

On February 2, 1939, the ship was officially commissioned into the Navy. As part of the submarine squadron, "Orzeł" took part in the initial period of coastal defense. Interned in the capital of Estonia, he managed to escape. Uncharted, she continued her patrol in the Baltic until 7 October before crossing the Øresund to Great Britain.

Operation from the British Isles, on April 8, 1940, while on patrol in the North Sea, she sank the ship "Rio de Janeiro", carrying German troops as part of Operation Weserübung - the information provided by the "Orzel" was one of the first signals indicating a German invasion of Norway.

For unknown reasons, the ORP "Orzeł" was lost with the entire crew while on patrol in the North Sea at the turn of May and June 1940.
