The M60 is an American second-generation main battle tank (MBT). It was officially standardized in March 1959 as Tank, Combat, Full Tracked: 105-mm Gun, M60. Although developed from the M48 Patton, the M60 series of tanks was never officially designated as a Patton tank, although it is sometimes included in the Patton series. Design similarities can be noted in the original variant of the M60 and M48A2 models. The US Army considered it an "improved product" of the Patton tank design. The US fully committed to main battle tank doctrine in 1963, when the Marine Corps retired the last battalion of M103 heavy tanks and the M60 series became America's main battle tank of the Cold War. Chrysler produced more than 15,000 M60 vehicles. Body production ended in 1983, but 5,400 older models were converted to the M60A3 variant by 1990.
