The name Panzerkampfwagen E with a numerical designation was used during the Second World War (or from 1943) to designate experimental armored vehicles, tanks and development models intended for the Wehrmacht. The letter E stood for Entwicklungsfahrzeug – development vehicle. This was followed by the designation of the weight category of the given type.
It was one of the last attempts of the Third Reich to create a whole series of new tanks. It was a standardized series of tracked chassis in six weight categories capable of replacing all types of tracked vehicles in the ranks of the Wehrmacht's armored units with a significant level of unification of components across ranks.
