Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell located in the clock tower at the north end of the Palace of Westminster, although the name is also commonly used for the clock and the clock tower itself. The official name of the tower in which Big Ben is located was originally the Clock Tower, but in 2012 it was changed to the 60th anniversary of the reign of Elizabeth II. renamed Elizabeth Tower.
The tower was designed by Auguste Pugin in the Neo-Gothic style. When completed in 1859, its clock was the largest and most accurate four-winding strike-and-chime clock in the world. The tower is 96 m (316 ft) high and there are 334 steps to climb from ground level to the bell tower. Its base is square, measuring 12 m (40 ft) on each side. The clock faces are 6.9 m (22.5 ft) in diameter. All four nations of the United Kingdom are depicted on the tower with shields with the symbols of the rose for England, the thistle for Scotland, the shamrock for Northern Ireland and the daffodil for Wales. On May 31, 2009, the 150th anniversary of the tower was celebrated.
Big Ben is the largest of the five bells on the tower and weighs 13.7 tons. For 23 years it was the largest bell in the United Kingdom. The origin of the bell's nickname is disputed; it may be named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who oversaw its installation, or heavyweight boxing champion Benjamin Caunt. The four quarter bells strike 15, 30 and 45 minutes after the hour and also just before Big Ben strikes the hour. The clock uses the original Victorian mechanism, but an electric motor can be used as a backup.
The tower is a British cultural icon recognized around the world. It is one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom and parliamentary democracy and is often used in the opening shots of films set in London. The Clock Tower has been a Grade I listed building since 1970 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
