Belém Tower (Portuguese: Torre de Belém) is a fortified tower in Lisbon, in the city's Belém district. It was built at the beginning of the 16th century in the so-called Manueline style, which is the final phase of Portuguese late Gothic. This defensive, yet elegant structure has become one of the symbols of the city. It is also one of the monuments of Portugal's great power during the period of great maritime discoveries at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1983, it was included, together with the nearby monastery of the Order of St. Jerome, on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
