The Brandenburg class was a ship class of barbet ironclads of the Kaiserliche Marine. A total of four units of this class were built and entered service in 1893–1894. They were the first German battleships capable of transoceanic service. Kurfürst Friedrich Wilhelm and Weissenburg were sold to the Ottoman Empire in 1910, which commissioned them as Barbaros Hayreddin and Turgut Reis. All four units were still in active service at the beginning of World War I (the German pair, however, only as part of coastal defense and for only one year). Barbaros Hayreddin was sunk in 1915 by the British submarine HMS E 11.
