Albrecht Dürer (May 21, 1471 Nuremberg - April 6, 1528 ibid.) Was a German painter, graphic artist and art theorist of European format.

His work includes more than 1,100 drawings, 34 watercolors, 108 copper engravings and etchings, around 246 woodcuts and 188 paintings. Newly discovered items are still being added to this file today: on June 8, 2005, the press stated that a large stained glass window in the church of St. James in Straubing, which depicts Moses receiving the tablets of the law, was created according to Dürer's design.

Dürer was a master of the highest order, like no other glass arched from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. He was the first German artist to write about his life, he was the first to treat self-portrait as a separate genre, he brought watercolor and printing to artistic and technological perfection at an early stage, he was the first in Germany to draw nudes according to living models and the first to support his practical work with artistic-theoretical treatises. Leonardo da Vinci stands up to it - but Dürer presented his results much more systematically than Leonardo. In 1525 he published in Nuremberg the first book on mathematics for adults in the German Introduction to Surveying and in 1527 the Doctrine of Fortification. These two theoretical works, together with the posthumously published Four Books on Proportion (1528), on which he worked for twenty years, belong to important treatises in the field of art theory.

In Germany, the period around 1500 is referred to as Dürer's epoch, which is associated with its heyday.
