The ZSU-23-4 ""Shilka"" is a lightly armored, self-propelled anti-aircraft system equipped with radar. The abbreviation ""ZSU"" (Zenitnaya samochodnaya ustanovka, Russian: Зенитная Самоходная Установка) means anti-aircraft self-propelled unit. The numbers 23-4 then indicate the caliber and number of guns. The machine is named after the Russian river Shilka.
The previous Soviet anti-aircraft twin-cannon, the ZSU-57-2, was armed with two 57 mm caliber guns, which were aimed at the target using an optical sight. Despite the good parameters of the guns, the machine was problematic in combat. The reason was the absence of radar, a small amount of ammunition and the impossibility of firing on the move.
The development of the ZSU-23-4 began in 1957 and the first units entered service in 1965. It gradually replaced all existing ZSU-57-2s in Soviet service. The primary task of the ZSU-23-4 is anti-aircraft defense of military facilities, infantry and other military equipment during movement. However, it is also successfully used (thanks to the possibility of zero to negative elevation) in direct infantry support, combat in urban areas, etc.
The ZSU-23-4 gradually entered service with many Warsaw Pact countries and other countries sympathetic to the USSR. Of the total number of 6,500 units produced, approximately 2,500 were exported to 23 countries.
