The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a two-seat, twin-engine, supersonic long-range fighter aircraft capable of operating in all weather conditions. It was originally designed as a carrier-based fighter aircraft for the United States Navy armed only with guided missiles, because at the time of its creation it was assumed that air battles would only take place at longer distances and that cannons would not be needed. However, the Phantom also proved itself in ground attack and reconnaissance. It entered service with the US Navy in 1960. Due to its qualities, it was later accepted into service with the US Marine Corps (USMC) and the US Air Force (USAF). In the mid-1960s, it became the dominant aircraft type within all three air branches of the US armed forces. Between 1959 and 1962, it set 15 aviation world records, including the absolute speed record and the absolute altitude record. The aircraft formed a significant part of the US Air Force even in the 1970s and 1980s, when they began to be replaced by more modern machines, such as the F-15 and F-16 in the US Air Force, and the F-14 and F/A-18 in the US Navy and Marine Corps. F-4 aircraft were successfully exported in large numbers around the world. The aircraft were used or are still used by 11 other countries around the world.
