Atlantis (event no. OV-104) is NASA's fourth space shuttle. It was named after America's first oceanographic vessel, a two-masted sailing vessel operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution from 1930–1966.
As the fourth shuttle to be built, Atlantis benefited from the experience gained by NASA engineers building previous shuttles. When completed, it weighed almost 3,500 kg less than the Space Shuttle Columbia and took half the time to build. Components that were not used during construction were later used in the construction of the fifth space shuttle, which is Endeavour.

The first Space Shuttle Atlantis mission (STS-51-J) took place on October 3–7, 1985, and was one of a total of five Space Shuttle missions that had a secret military mission. Since 1995, Atlantis has made a total of seven flights to the Russian space station Mir. During the second flight, a docking module was attached to the station, which made it possible to exchange astronauts during subsequent missions.

From November 1997 to July 1999, Atlantis underwent a reconstruction, during which around 165 modifications were made. The missions that Atlantis has flown since then have been to the International Space Station. The exception is flight STS-125 from May 2009, when space shuttle Atlantis went to repair the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), thus ensuring its service life until at least 2013.
