The Volkswagen Schwimmwagen (German: Volkswagen Type 166 Schwimmwagen or KdF 166 Schimmwagen) was a military amphibious car with four-wheel drive (4×4) with a four-seater body, with an engine located at the rear and a folding propeller at the stern. Series production began in 1942. The body was manufactured by the Berlin company Ambi-Budd.

The first prototypes of the amphibious KdF were created in 1940 on the basis of an army order. In September, three prototypes were successively tested under the designation KdF 128. The amphibians with a body similar to the KdF 82 type had a wheelbase of 2400 mm, a track of both axles of 1360 mm and its chassis was related to the KdF 87 type (VW Beetle 4×4), a speed on water of 10 km/h. These prototypes were also equipped with paddles and a three-meter depth measuring rod. The four-wheel drive had a switchable front axle drive.

A total of 14,276 KdF 166 cars were produced by the autumn of 1944 at a price of 4,200 RM.
