The Dassault Rafale is a French twin-engine multi-role fighter aircraft with a delta wing and canard surfaces. It was designed and manufactured by Dassault Aviation. It is equipped with a wide range of weapons and is designed to gain air supremacy, combat missions, aerial reconnaissance, ground support, deep strikes, anti-ship strikes and nuclear deterrence. The Rafale is described by Dassault as a "general" aircraft.
In the late 1970s, the French Air Force and French Navy were seeking to replace and consolidate their existing aircraft fleets. In order to reduce development costs and increase potential sales, France entered into an agreement with the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Spain to produce an agile multi-role aircraft (the "Future European Fighter Aircraft", which became the Eurofighter Typhoon). Subsequent disagreements over work sharing and differing requirements led France to pursue its own program. Dassault built a technology demonstrator that first flew in July 1986 as part of an eight-year flight test program, paving the way for the project to begin. The Rafale differs from other European fighters of its time in that it is almost entirely built by a single country, mostly by France's major arms suppliers such as Dassault, Thales and Safran.
