The Mil Mi-17 (NATO reporting name "Hip", in Russia referred to as the Mi-8M) is an export version of the Soviet multi-purpose twin-engine helicopter Mil Mi-8 of the classic configuration with a five-blade main rotor and a three-blade tail rotor. It is one of the most widely used helicopters in the world. The first prototype of the experimental V-8 machine with one AI-24V engine and a four-blade rotor (Hip-A) flew on June 9, 1961, and the prototype of the final twin-engine version (Hip-B) on September 17, 1962. The helicopter received a larger rotor head in 1964 and its serial production began at the end of 1965. The machine is constantly being modernized, is still being produced today and has served or is serving in about 50 countries around the world (including the Czech Republic) for military and civilian purposes.

Propulsion is provided by TV3-117MT engines with an output of 2 x 1,435 kW. The three-bladed tail rotor, unlike the Mil Mi-8, is on the left side of the tail spar, the engine inlets have separators for separating solid particles from the air. The machine is equipped with navigation and communication means that allow operation in all weather conditions, day and night. Furthermore, the helicopter is equipped with means of protection against anti-aircraft missiles with passive IR guidance.
