The M113 is an American tracked armored personnel carrier developed by Food Machinery Corporation. The vehicle was first assigned to the US Army's Motorized Troops in Vietnam in April 1962. The M113 became the most widely used armored vehicle of the US Army during the Vietnam War, earning the nickname "Green Dragon" from the Viet Cong because it was used to break through dense jungle thickets and to attack and raid enemy positions.
The M113 also featured new aluminum armor, making it much lighter than earlier vehicles. The carrier was strong enough to provide protection for the crew and any infantry inside the vehicle against light weapons, but also light enough to be airliftable and to provide amphibious capabilities.
