Kokořín Castle is located about ten kilometers northeast of Mělník above the river Pšovka in the Dokesská Uplands, near the village of Kokořín. It was built after 1320, probably by the burgrave of Prague Hynek Berka of Duba. According to the name of the castle, the whole protected area is called Kokořínsko.

In 1426, the castle was conquered and destroyed by Hussite troops. After the Hussite wars, the castle often changed owners (in the 15th century Řitka of Bezdědice and Klinštějnová, in the 16th century Beřkovští of Šebířov and Kaplířová). Since 1544 it is listed as desolate. His fate was exacerbated by the decision of Emperor Ferdinand II. to include it among the so-called cursed castles, ie castles that were not allowed to be maintained, because otherwise, due to their advantageous position, they could endanger the ruling power.

In 1894, the ruins were bought by the Prague businessman Václav Špaček, whose son Jan had it reconstructed in neo-Gothic style before the First World War. In the years 1911–1916, the castle was modified to its current form by the architect Eduard Sochor according to the instructions of August Sedláček and Čeňek Zíbrt. In 1951, the castle was nationalized or confiscated. In 2001, it became a national cultural monument; This made it difficult, but not impossible, to return to the Špaček family: Kokořín was returned in 2006.
