The Focke-Wulf Fw 187 Falke was a two-seat German twin-engine all-metal low-wing fighter with retractable spur-type landing gear.
In 1935, Kurt Tank developed a preliminary design for a twin-engine fighter aircraft without an official order. At the beginning of 1936, he presented his design at an exhibition of the latest weapons held at the Henschel factory near Berlin. Although Adolf Hitler was very fond of the project, the officials of the Technical Office showed no interest in the project. Their argument was that the expected performance was identical to single-engine aircraft. The advantages of the longer range of the twin-engine design, suitable as an escort for Luftwaffe bombers, were rejected by the Technisches Amt.
Tank was not discouraged by the officials' reaction and soon turned directly to the head of the development department of the technical department, Oberst Wolfram von Richthofen. Von Richthofen supported Kurt Tank's idea and the Focke-Wulf company subsequently received an order for three prototypes under the designation Fw 187.
