The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an American combat aircraft that was created as a result of the Joint Strike Fighter program (or joint attack fighter), announced by the US Department of Defense in order to create a unified multi-role fighter that would be included in the armament of the USAF, USN, USMC and NATO allies. Thanks to this, it is possible to produce machines in large series, which significantly reduced their price.
It is a fifth-generation class of single-seat, single-engine, multi-role fighter aircraft in development, designed to conduct ground attack, reconnaissance and air defense missions with stealth technology.
Since different versions of the F-35 are supposed to replace such diverse machines as the A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-16 Fighting Falcon, AV-8B Harrier II and F/A-18 Hornet, three main versions of this aircraft have been created: the first is a variant with a conventional takeoff and landing (F-35A), the second is a variant with a short takeoff and vertical landing (F-35B) and the third is a variant designed for operations from aircraft carriers with CATOBAR characteristics (F-35C). Two more modifications were created for the needs of other users (Israeli Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force). They will thus represent the majority of the US manned tactical air force.
