The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. It was developed as part of the VFX program for the United States Navy after the F-111B project was canceled. The F-14 was the first of the newer American fighter aircraft (the so-called teen-series), which were designed taking into account the experience of dogfights with MiGs during the Vietnam War.

The F-14 first flew in December 1970 and entered service in 1974 aboard the USS Enterprise, replacing the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. The F-14 served in the United States Navy from 1974 to 2006 primarily as a naval air superiority fighter and reconnaissance aircraft.

In the 1980s, the F-14 was used by the Iranian Air Force as a ground-launched fighter during the Iraq War, in which it shot down at least 160 Iraqi aircraft (only 55 of which are confirmed according to historian Tom Cooper), for the loss of 16 Tomcats, including seven lost in accidents. As of 2022, the F-14 remains in service with the Iranian Air Force, although in low numbers due to a shortage of spare parts.
