The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a German fighter aircraft that was the standard Luftwaffe fighter aircraft just before World War II and formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force along with the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 during the war. It first entered service in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War and was still in service when jet aircraft were introduced at the end of World War II in 1945. It was one of the most advanced fighters at the time of its creation. It featured modern design features such as an all-metal cantilever structure, an enclosed cockpit and retractable landing gear. It was powered by a liquid-cooled, twelve-cylinder inverted combustion engine. It was commonly called the Me 109, especially by Allied crews and among German aces, although this was not an official German designation.
