The beginnings of the development of the BA-64 armored car date back to 1941, when the GAZ-64 jeep began to be produced in the Soviet Union. This four-wheel drive car proved to be a successful type, so the proposal for its modification into a light armored car was not long in coming.
The prototype of the armored car with the designation BA-64 was completed in the fall of 1941. Tests were conducted from January 9, 1942, and in early March the machine was accepted into service with the Red Army.
