The Albatros D.V was a German single-seat biplane fighter aircraft used during World War I, manufactured by Albatros Flugzeugwerke.
Idflieg showed an interest in improving the Albatros D.III and ordered the development of the new type in April 1917. As the D.IV was given the experimental development aircraft designation, the direct successor of the D.III was the fifth "D" category Albatros. The D.V had a new hull with an elliptical cross-section that reduced the flat surfaces of its predecessor's hull. The larger oval vertical tail surfaces were taken from the D.III version produced by the Ostdeutsche Albatros Werke branch. The wings remained almost the same, only the upper one moved closer to the fuselage by ten centimeters and the lower one was suspended without transition covers. The cable management of the ailerons was also redesigned. The first examples had a large headrest, but the pilots usually removed it because it obstructed the view to the rear. Thanks to structural modifications, the designers achieved a weight saving of 50 kg.
